Samsung Galaxy S20 review: 8K recording, 120Hz display and more

Last Updated on December 10, 2020 by Rick Darlinton

Released in February this year, the Samsung Galaxy S20 is another amazing and sleek smartphone compared to Galaxy S10.  There are another two devices of Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra that were launched at the same time but in this article, we will focus on introducing the Galaxy S20 ranging from its major features to the technical specifications. Compared to other Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy S20 features a n upgraded camera system, 8K recording video, 120Hz display and high-quality 3x optical zoom shots.  Of course, 5G is another powerful feature that you will love it so much.

Galaxy S20 Design

Galaxy S20 comes with a  6.2-inch screen with a fast 120Hz refresh rate and 20:9 aspect ratio.   When it comes to visual design, Galaxy S20 is outstanding with a sense of sleek and elegant aesthetics.  If you care more about how the phone feels in your hand, then the S20 device will bring you a satisfying and exciting experience.  First of all, the device is very lightweight which weighs only 163g with an impressive thickness of 7.9mm. There are four colors available which include Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue, Cloud Pink and Cosmic Black but it may also depend on where you live.

Similar to Galaxy S10, the S20 also features a single punch hole that holds the selfie camera but for the Galaxy S20 the punch hole is placed on the top middle of the screen. A big change in terms of the Galaxy S20 design relies on its tiny bezel design on the edges or it seems there are no curves. But in general, the thinner bezel design makes the device look more visually sleek and elegant.

When it comes to hardware design, the volume and power buttons are placed on the right side of the phone while on the left side you can not see any buttons. Add to the bottom side of the device are the USB Type-C port, a loudspeaker and a microphone.

Galaxy S20 Display

For the display, there are actually two types of refresh rate options for Galaxy S20, namely, 120Hz and 60Hz. You can also manually switch between 120Hz and 60Hz. However, many people say they find it hard to switch back to 60Hz after you know how smooth and wonderful it is to use the device with 120Hz.

Another highlight is the 2K display resolution that’s available for the Galaxy S20 which delivers a better viewing experience. But unfortunately, the QHD 2K display resolution and 120Hz can not be turned on at the same time. So you have to accept 1080P if you also want to get a more responsive use experience with 120Hz refresh rate.  Anyway, generally speaking, the 1080P display for the Galaxy S20 seems to have a much better viewing experience compared to other android phones in the market.

Outstanding Camera system

The camera system is another highlight for the Galaxy S20 device which is designed with one 12MP main camera, a 12MP ultra wide-angle camera and another 64MP telephoto camera. But by default, the main 12M camera works.  If you love taking better photos or videos and share them on social media, Galaxy S20 is one of your best smartphone choices. Generally, the photos taken on a Galaxy S20 look vivid, clear, and natural with a proper level of brightness.

There is also a 10MP selfie camera on the top middle of the punch hole of the device. Whether you are recording yourself in a video for YouTube or for a simple Vlog, the selfie camera on a Galaxy S20 device delivers a great shooting experience.  For example, when you shoot a selfie video with both Galaxy S20 and a professional camera, sometimes you may find it hard to distinguish which video clip is taken by the Galaxy S20.

If you are looking to take photos at night, Galaxy S20 could be your favorite device due to its impressive low-light mode shooting feature which captures more details and color hues under low light atmosphere.

In terms of optical zoom, the Galaxy S20 offers up to 30x digital zooms.  On top of that, you will be able to record 8K videos with Galaxy S20 which is one of the impressive upgrades. Although you may do not need 8K footage and 4K is enough most of time,  8K video recording is really a big surprise.

Performance

The Galaxy S20 device has a 8GB or 12GB RAM(which may vary in different regions) and 128G of ROM with up to 1TB expandable storage.  The space, in general, is large enough for you to store big files, play games, or do video editing work on your mobile phone, etc.  The processor for the Galaxy S20 is the Snapdragon 865 or high-quality Exynos 990 depending on different countries.

4,000mAh battery

The 4000mAh battery is not so big but it can let you watch youtube videos, listen to music,  call online or browse Facebook and more up to 13 hours under 60Hz refresh rate. The device supports 25W fast charging that can be finished from 0 to 100% within one hour. Please note the battery may drain faster if you use a higher refresh rate of 120Hz instead of 60Hz. Comparably, 120Hz consumes up to 30% more battery juice than 60Hz.
