How to Fix a Blue Screen of Death in Windows 10/8/7

The blue screen of death in Windows 10, 8, or 7 is a very common problem that most people may face. It not only affects your normal use of the device but also wastes your time as you have to turn off the device and boot it up again. The blue screen of death could be caused by different factors such as a damaged hard drive, corrupted third-party software or something else. In this post, we are going to show you why your Windows PC has the blue screen of death and how to fix a blue screen of death in Windows 10,8 or 7.

Why does the Windows blue screen of death happens

As said earlier above, there are many different reasons why the windows blue screen of death happens. We will list some of the major factors below resulting in the blue screen of the death problem.

1. Hardware issue

It is not uncommon to see that you have the issue of blue screen of death on your Windows PC just because some hardware devices inside are damaged or malfunctioning properly. For example, the hard drive has some glitches. If this is the case, you have no choice but to give the PC to the computer repair shop nearby.

2. Loose data cable between memory bank and hard drive

Another reason why your windows PC enters the blue screen of death is that the data cable connecting the memory bank and the hard drive is loose or not working properly.

3. The PC is overheating

Sometimes, if the Windows PC is overheating, particularly for the CPU, graphics card, and Mainboard, the blue screen of death may also happen. These hardware devices are very crucial in terms of computer performance. If you do not use the computer, it is better to turn it off instead of letting it run all day.

4. The computer is attacked by a virus

When the virus attacks the computer system, the blue screen of death may also happen. To check this, you can use some reliable anti-virus software online to scan the virus and remove it.

5. Software compatibility issue

If you just installed some software or drivers that are not compatible with your computer, it can result in the error of windows blue screen of death. To fix these, you could enter the safe mode and uninstall those software.

6. Poor battery

A poor battery with an unstable voltage could intervene with the performance of the PC and makes your pc keep blue screening.

How to fix the Blue screen for Windows 10,8,7

After we know some basic reasons behind the error of Blue screen of death for windows 10,8,7, let’s try some solutions below.

1. Restart your computer

If your computer encounters the error of Blue screen all of a sudden, you could just restart your  computer and then open again to check whether the Windows blue screen issue still exists or not. If it is not fixed, let’s try some other fixes below.

2. Disconnect external devices from the computer

When the computer keeps going back to the blue screen, you can firstly disconnect the external devices such as USB, printer, Bluetooth device, and more. After disconnecting the external devices, if the issue is fixed, the blue screen error may be caused by some external devices. Next, you can just update the drivers for the external devices resulting in the blue screen error.  But if the issue still exists after disconnecting the external devices, what you can do is enter the BIOS to check the hard drive and memory.  To enter the BIOS, just press f2 repeatedly during the computer boot-up process.

3. Enter the safe mode

This is a common fix to be used when your computer encounters the error of blue screen of death by entering the safe mode in Windows. To enter the safe mode in Windows 10, you can try the steps below

  • Press the Windows key+I to go to the settings.
  • Now tap on the Update & Security and then select Recovery
  • Open recovery settings under the option of Advanced Startup. Next, tap on Restart Now
  • Select choose an option when the computer restarts and then go to Troubleshoot>Advanced options>Startup Settings>Restart
  • Press F4 to to enter the safe mode.

After entering the safe mode in windows, If the blue screen error does not exist, then you can uninstall the software you just installed recently. But if the issue still exists, you can uninstall the system updates. To check the system updates, just press Windows + i, and then select Update and security, then check the update history and finally just undo the new updates.

4. Reinstall the windows system

You can reinstall the windows system to fix the Blue screen of death error. But please note you should backup your important data to external storage devices to protect the data.  There are different methods to reinstall the windows system and you can also reinstall the windows system without losing the data on your PC. For this, I suggest you ask for help from some professionals when you need to reinstall the windows system.

5. Update the drivers in Windows

As said earlier above, the driver compatibility issue can also let your computer encounter the error of blue screen of death. The fix is very simple: update the driver in Windows.  For example, if you use Windows 10, you can follow the instructions below to update the drivers.

  • From the Start menu, type the device manager and then tap on the drivers you need to update manually.
  • Next, right-click the device and select update software driver
  • Tap on search automatically for updated driver software and click on update driver.
  • You can also download the new driver from the manufacturer’s site and update it on your windows.

If you want to enable the automatic updates for drivers in Windows, you can follow the following steps

  • Press Windows key+R and enter: gpedit.msc and tap on enter button
  • Now double-rick the option of Do not include drivers with windows update and then click on Enabled button

6. Run CHKDSK command

Another reason why your windows 10 has the error of blue screen is that you just install a new hardware or software that is not compatible with the system. This is particularly common the technical 0x000000ed blue screen of death issue. You can follow the instructions below to fix the issue.

  • Press Windows key+R and then enter CMD. After that, press the OK key
  • Now type the following information and press the enter key

Chkdsk C:/r

Chkdsk D:/r

Chkdsk E:/r

Chkdsk F:/r

7. Run the antivirus software on your PC

Sometimes, when your computer keeps blue-screening, you can also use reliable anti-virus software to scan and remove the viruses. Please use some quality anti-virus software online to protect your computer.

8. Update the BIOS in windows

Sometimes, if the BOIS is outdated, it may also cause the error of the blue screen of death. For example, the outdated BOIS may not support the hard drive with large storage. You can also disable the cache and shadowing in BOIS and check the hardware compatibility issues.

9. Check system bugs using Event viewer

You can use event viewer to check some system bugs or security bugs.  To do so,  press Windows key +R and then enter eventvwr.msc to view the logs. This process helps you view some logs about which problems may exist on your windows pc
