It is quite frustrating wen you suddenly find your laptop keyboard is not working or when you type something, it just shows the same number or label repeatedly. This may affect your work severely. But do not worry further as we will bring several solutions in this post about how to fix laptop keyboard not working.
Why is the laptop keyboard not working?
There are many different factors that may result in laptop keyboard not working. For example, your keyboard may get water damaged or it is covered with dust.
1. The laptop is water-damaged
This is one of the reasons why the laptop keyboard malfunctions for many people. You may just sprinkle the water or coffee on the keyboard. If this is the case, you will have to give the laptop to the repair shop nearby to fix the issue
2.It is covered with dust
The laptop keyboard covered with dust can malfunction due to the disconnection issue inside the keyboard. It is common that many people do not have a very good habit of cleaning the laptop keyboard regularly. As a result, the device is prone to dust damage in the long run. If your laptop keyboard is not working, you can first clean the keyboard gently and check again whether the issue can be fixed.
3. The keyboard data cable is disconnected
Last year, my laptop keyboard was also not working all of a sudden. No matter what i typed using the keyboard, it always showed the same number which was very frustrating. Finally, I got it repaired by a computer repair shop near me. The issue was that the data cable was disconnected
4. Driver issues
Another common issue that may cause the laptop keyboard not to work normally is the keyboard driver. For this, i will introduce in this post below about how to update the keyboard driver.
How to fix laptop keyboard not working
After knowing some basic reasons that result in the problem, let’s try these solutions to fix them.
1. Use an external keyboard or on-screen keyboard
First off, as your laptop keyboard is not working, you may need a external keyboard or use the on-screen keyboard (OSK) to fix the issues. To enable the on-screen keyboard on your laptop, just press windows key+R firstly and then type OSK to enable the on-screen keyboard. After that, you will be able to use the keyboard temporarily when you need to finish some work urgently on your PC.
2.Update the keyboard driver
When the laptop keyboard is not working properly, you can try to update the keyboard driver in several steps. Just press the Start menu on your screen and then type device manager. After that, expand the lists and find the keyboard device. Right-click the driver and click on Update driver software.
3. Enter BIOS on your laptop
You can also try to enter BIOS to check the issues that may cause the laptop keyboard not to work. Just press the f2( or other keys depending on different laptop brands) repeatedly when you boot up the laptop. After entering the BIOS, you can check whether you turn off the USB or the keyboard option by mistake.
4. Fix the laptop keyboard not working via Registry Editor
This is another solution you can try to fix the laptop keyboard not working by opening the registry editor.
- Press Windows key+R
- Then type regedit
- Now find the the file of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then go to System>currentControlset>services>usbstor.
- Now double click on the Start option and change the number to 2
- When this is done, you can check again if the problem is fixed.
5.Run the system configuration editor on your laptop
You can also try to run the Config.sys on your laptop to fix the issue.
- Press windows+R and then type sysedit
- Now open the system configuration editor
- Type the Numlock=ON in the editor of Config. sys and save the setting
6. Get your keyboard fixed from the computer shop
If all of these solutions can not fix the issue, then you have to ask for help from professionals nearby. It may be caused due to hardware problems. You can either repair the keyboard or replace a new one.
