The system restore is used in Windows operating system to help you roll back the system files, updates and installations in Windows 10, 7 and more. Insufficient space on your disk
Sometimes, the reason behind the system restore not working is that there isn’t enough space on your disk. So when the issue happens, you could check the space of your disk.
Software compatibility issues
There are perhaps some malicious software that are not compatible with your computer and causes the issue of system restore not working. If this happens, you can check some recently installed programs and check whether they are not compatible with your windows.
How to Fix System restore not working
Make sure system restore function is enabled
Sometimes, when you upgrade your windows system from windows 7 to Windows 10, the system restore function may be disabled. So, you should check about this if the error exists.
- Go to This computer>Properties>System protection
- Go to “Computer” on your desktop and select “Properties”> “System Protection”.
- Check whether the “System Protection” is turned on. If it is disabled, you need to manually enable the system restore by clicking on “Configure”> and then turning on the “System Protection” option.
Try Startup repair
- First off, press the power key on your computer.
- Press the power key to turn on the computer.
- Press the power key to shut down computer for 3 times when windows icon appears.
- Now click on “Advanced options” in the automatic repair screen
- Navigate to “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced Options” > “Startup repair”
Increase disk space
Insufficient usage is one of the reasons why system restore is not working in Windows 10. Therefore, it is important to increase the disk space on your computer.
- Go to control panel>system>system protection
- Click on “Configure”
- Select “turn on system protection”
- Under Disk Space Usage, you can adjust the Max usage slider from default to disk space such 6%.
Uninstall incompatible programs
Sometimes, some third-party programs may interfere with the system restoration including the creation and restoration process. Therefore, you need to uninstall or disable these kind of programs.
Enter the safe mode.
You can try to restore the system under safe mode in windows 10.
- Press F8 repeatedly when restarting your computer and then you will enter the security mode.
- After entering the security mode, enter “Recovery” in the search box. Then, choose it. In the pop -up window, click “Start System Restoration”.
- Then, you will enter “System Restore”, click “Next” and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process.
Check the disk error
Sometimes, when the files and folders on the disk may been damaged, it may cause the system restore not to work normally. In order to repair the damaged files, you can try to check the hard disk drive following the steps below.
- Press Win + R and then type the CMD in the “Run” window. Then click “OK”.
- Type chkdsk /f /r f: and then press Enter. Replace “C” with the drive letter of the partition you want to repair.
Run the system file checker
Sometimes, the reason why system restore is not working is that the system files may be damaged. If this is the case, you can run the system file checker to repair the issue.
- Press windows key +R to Open the CMD window.
- Enter “sfc /scannow” and press Enter.
