How to fix Macbook Pro camera not working

Restart Mac

No matter what types of errors happen to your Mac, the first thing that comes into your mind is to restart the Mac device. A simple restart process can help fix many software glitches or problems. So if the camera is not connected or not working on Mac, you can just try to restart the Mac device.

Give permissions

If your facetime or skype camera is not working, it may happen when permission isn’t given to these apps. So you can check whether you have already given permissions to to the apps that can access your in-built camera. Follow the steps below to give apps permissions

  • Go to Apple menu and then select System Preferences
  • Now choose security & privacy
  • Next, select the tap of privacy and tap on Camera
  • Finally, choose the checkbox of the apps you want to give access to your camera.

Update Mac software

Sometimes, the reason why the MacBook Pro camera is not working or connecting is that the current Mac software is outdated. The new updates from the Mac can bring some advanced features and help improve the device security. You can try to update the Mac software to fix the MacBook Pro camera not working on Mac.

  • Just choose the Apple menu and then go to System Preferences
  • Now click software update in the window and then tap on Update Now or Upgrade Now
  • If the update is not available in the system preferences, you can also go to the app store to get the latest update.

Run Apple diagnostics

  • start your Mac and press &hold the D key when Mac boots up.
  • After that, release the D key when the apple progress bar shows.
  • Now the apple diagnostics will start to check the hardware errors if they exist.

Try another camera app

When one of the camera apps fails to work properly on Mac, it is advisable to install another camera app. Or if you find the facetime camera is not working, we suggest you use other alternatives such as Skype or Zoom.  You can do this particularly when you have urgent work to do.

Force quit VDCAssistant and AppleCameraAssistant

Another solution that can be used to help fix MacBook Pro not working on Mac or the issue of camera isn’t connected is to force quit VDCAssistant and AppleCameraAssistant. After doing that, it will help close any apps that use your in-built camera. You can do this according to the steps below

  • First off, go to applications > Utilities and open the Terminal on your Mac
  • After that, copy the and press the following command

sudo killall VDCAssistant

  • Next, press and enter

sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant

  • Just enter the admin password if required.

Enter safe mode on Mac

You can enter safe mode on Mac to check whether the camera can work properly under the safe mode. You may find some problems with your apps under the safe mode. For example, if the camera work well under the safe mode, you can uninstall some apps you just installed.

  • Turn on your Mac
  • Pres and hold the Shift key on Mac
  • Now the apple logo will show
  • Just release the shift key when the login window appears.
  • Enter the admin password as required

  • Go to Apple menu and then turn of Mac
  • Now press the Shift-control-Option keys on your Mac and then press the power key at the same time.
  • Hold and press all of these 4 keys for 10 seconds
  • Release all the keys and then press the power key to start your Mac
